On April 20, within the framework of the festival of science and intellect «Science Festivities» in Lviv Polytechnic National University, two photography exhibitions, «State construction. Latvian architecture in the 9th-21st centuries» and «The style of Modern in architecture: Riga and Latvia», were opened. Juris Poikāns, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia in Ukraine, Gvido Princis, Chief Architect of Riga, and Yulian Chaplinskyy, Chief Architect of Lviv, attended this event.
– These exhibitions are well-thought through and well-composed so that more people can see them, Riga Modern and Urbanistics in particular. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia initiated the exhibitions. They were shown in Kyiv and Chernihiv. I hope that these exhibitions will help the citizens of Lviv to get acquainted with Riga and it will inspire them to visit our city. This is my first time in Lviv. I haven’t managed to see a lot, but I will definitely see the city, since there is so much beautiful historic architecture, – Gvido Princis, Vice-Rector of Riga Technical University, said.
The exhibitions present photographs depicting distinguished architectural buildings in Latvia, for instance, libraries, theatres, palaces, memorials, a famous resort in Jūrmala, wooden buildings of central Riga, architecture of ancient Riga streets, museums, churches, etc.
– Ukraine and Latvia have had cultural, historical and economic ties for a long time. Lviv Polytechnic co-operates with Riga Technical University. Students and lecturers had training programs in Latvia. I hope that this co-operation will be very fruitful, – Yuriy Bobalo, Lviv Polytechnic National University Rector, said.
Juris Poikāns, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia in Ukraine, told us briefly about the exhibition works:
– Latvia, as well as Lviv, has a very rich and dynamic history. Such countries as Germany, Poland, Sweden, Russia, had influence on the territory of Latvia, which you can see today in these photographs. I am sure that everyone will be able to find something interesting.
