On July 3, 2019, in Lviv, near the memorial of famous Lviv professors shot by the German Nazists on the night of July 4, 1941, on the Vuletsky hills, a traditional commemorative meeting took place.
On this day every year Lviv Polytechnicians, together with their colleagues from other universities of our city, as well as numerous representatives of Polish universities, recall tragic pages of our common to both countries history. Under the cover of the night, Nazists occupied Lviv, arresting and shooting nearly fifty Polish researchers and academics, as well as their families.
The commemorative meeting was opened with the hymns of Poland and Ukraine, performed by the Orpheus National Male Choir of the Prosvita People’s House of Lviv Polytechnic, accompanied by the People’s Wind Orchestra.
Near the monument, which was erected in the form of stones, symbolizing the ten commandments of God, fifth of which – «You shall not kill!» – was broken. People’s deputy of Ukraine Oksana Yurynets, the Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Lviv Rafal Wolski, the Mayor of the city of Wrocław Jacek Zbigniew Sutryk, the Rector of Lviv Polytechnic National University and the Chairman of Rector’s Council in Lviv region Professor Yurii Bobalo, the former Rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology Tadeusz Więckowski, the President of Wroclaw Board of Scientific and Technical Associations Tadeusz Nawracaj and the Director of the Development Department at Lviv City Council Nataliia Bunta came to the monument to commemorate the researchers and lay flowers to the monument. There were also heads and delegations from different universities of Wroclaw, Poznan, Lublin, Rzeszow and all Lviv universities, academic community, public activists and clergy.
At the end of the ceremony, clergy – the Archbishop of Lviv Archdiocese Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki and the Head of the Center for Student Chaplaincy of Lviv Archeparchy of the UGCC Yurii Ostapiuk – conducted a memorial service.
After the commemorative event, Yurii Bobalo, the Rector of Lviv Polytechnic, met with the Polish delegation. The participants of the meeting discussed the planned construction of a memory pavilion on the Vuletsky hills, which will serve as an exhibition hall with permanent and temporary exhibits.
