The course «European experience of welding in the construction and repair of pipelines» was completed at the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering and Welding, Lviv Polytechnic.
It was conducted by Polish visiting professor Jerzy Nagay.
– You conducted an international course at the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering and Welding. How long did it last and what did it involve?
– This course was supposed to take place in the spring of 2020 in the traditional form, but due to the pandemic all plans had to be changed. Finally, the course was organized in December 2020 and completed in January 2021. It provided 60 hours of lectures and covered various welding methods during the construction and repair of pipelines. However since the Department is connected with Oil and Gas Engineering, it was about the construction of oil and gas facilities. It was a free course in which students gained important knowledge in their specialty. I hope we will conduct the next such course traditionally – in the classroom with students.
– What prompted you to conduct this course at Polytechnic?
– The specialty «Welding» in Polytechnic, and in Ukraine in general, no longer exists: after 2016, this specialty became part of others as an additional specialization. Universities provide only a base. Therefore, after any University, to work as a welding engineer, you must additionally complete a unified course under the program of the European Welding Federation (EWF), which covers 448 lectures and practical classes. In addition, the European system of training personnel for welding production provides for upskilling training program every three years, which is also, as far as I know, in accordance with current legislation of Ukraine.
