The British journal Times Higher Education published the annual World University Rankings 2024 which includes 15 out of 42 Ukrainian institutions of higher education that provided data for participation (last year – 11 out of 28).
Lviv Polytechnic National University has been highly ranked for eight years in a row. This year, just like last one, it is included in the group of 601–800 best universities in the world and is one of only two higher education institutions of Ukraine that made it into the top 1000 world universities.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is one of the three largest international university rankings, along with the Shanghai ARWU and the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking agency. In total, the World University Rankings 2024 includes 1,904 universities from 108 countries (last year – 1,799 from 104 countries).
On the top of the World University Rankings 2024 there are the institutions of Great Britain and the USA: the first place is taken by the University of Oxford, Great Britain, the second place – Stanford University, USA, and the third place – the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). The universities from these two countries fill the top 10 of the rankings.
This year’s rankings is based on the new WUR 3.0 methodology, which includes 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across five areas: teaching (29.5%, reputation and learning environment), research environment (29%, reputation and research income and productivity), research quality (30%, citation impact and research), industry (4%), and international outlook (7.5%, international students and staff, and international co-authorship).
The peculiarity of the rankings is the significant impact of reputation indicators. 33% of the final score (15% for teaching and 18% for research) is determined by how the participants of the international survey of scientists and staff evaluated the institution of higher education.
