On March 15 in the evening, lots of students came to Lviv Polytechnic sports complex. A lot of people were willing to watch best University athletes being awarded cups and diplomas, as usual. The program of the celebration, dedicated to the University bicentenary, turned out to be usual – great shows, various awards, applause and more applause…
At the beginning of the ceremony, the hosts mentioned that the year of 2016 was full of sports events for polytechnics. For instance, Anatoliy Demchuk (fencing), ICSI lecturer, and Victor Didukh (table tennis), INEM graduate, won two gold medals for Paralympics team of Ukraine. 29 students can take pride in their achievements in last year’s Ukrainian championships and cup tournaments. In total, 35 coaches and 500 student athletes received bonuses for their significant achievements in sports.
After Oksana Raita, member of Ukrainian track-and-field team, medal winner of the championship and cup of Ukraine, hoisted the State flag of Ukraine, and Ukrainian anthem was played, Professor Yuriy Bobalo, Rector of Lviv Polytechnic, greeted those present at the event:
–Lviv Polytechnic is an institution that has not only good infrastructure and great academic achievements. It is also one of the best universities in Ukraine. During the 200 years of its existence, lots of events happened here, lots of traditions appeared. The Department of Physical Education has a very special place in the structure of Lviv Polytechnic. Due to its high results, it affects the image of the University. That is why I would like to thank those students, who are keen on doing sports, and those lecturers, who help them. But I would like to thank most of all those who just do sports, because it is essential if you want to be healthy and intelligent.
Yuriy Maiboroda, head of Lviv regional state administration department, gave honourary diplomas to Rector and Victor Koryahin, Head of the Department of Physical Education. Anatoliy Ihnatovych, head of Lviv branch of the Physical Education and Sports Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, presented a cup for the second prize in Lviv University Games 2016.
Five students – Oleh Lehendzevych (futsal, ITRE), Serhiy Mahir (rowing and canoeing, ICSI), Yosyf Pankiv and Mykola Savinkov (both – rugby, IBEE), Mykhailo Pavliv (rugby, IGD) received certificates of completing classification standards of the master of sports of Ukraine from Rector.
Top ten of the best athletes of 2016 includes Pavlo Nakonechniy (powerlifting, INEM), Yuriy Dumych (canoeing, IMFS), Rostyslav Ferents (karate Kyokushinkai, INJP), Nazariy Tuvakov (sambo, judo, IARC), Oksana Raita (track-and-field, IAPE), Oleksandr Tymofeyev (table tennis, IGD), Oleh Lehendzevych (futsal, ITRE), Yuriy Badan (orienteering, ICSI), Mykhailo Biber (volleyball, IEMT), Volodymyr Palyuh (basketball, IARC).
Best teams included table tennis team (coach – Ihor Tykhyi), men’s basketball team (coaches – Anatoliy Zaverikin and Yaroslav Zubrytskiy) and power lifting team (coach – Volodymyr Oliyarnyk).
Students of IGD, INEM, IPEC, ICSI, ICCT, ITRE took the most active part in the Students Games. Lecturers of IHSS, INEM and IEMT were among most active professors and lecturers.
The spectators were greeted by Lviv Polytechnic team «Tehnika», Students Games team aerobics champions, (coach – Olena Cherepovska), first and second year students of the Institute of Geodesy and sports aerobics team (coach – m.s. Marta Melnychuk), Lviv Polytechnic kettlebell lifting team (coach – Vasyl Svitlyk), people’s dancing company «Virnist», brass orchestra of Petro Sahaidachniy Academy of Land Forces, ball dances company «Hratsiya». Polytechnic alumni, masters of sports in gymnastics Tetyana Lesyuk (INEM) and Rosyna Nhuyen (ICSI), world championship finalists and Ukrainian cup holders in acrobatics Yuriy Push, Vladyslav and Stanislav Kukurudz, Taras Yarush and their coach Kostyantyn Kukurudz, karate team and children’s group of Kyokushinkai federation (sensei – m.s. Oleksandr Korol) also joined the celebration.
The event concluded on a musical and dancing note and the Department of Physical Education wished everyone success in studies and sports.
