The students and faculty of the Institute of Architecture and Design, Lviv Polytechnic National University, took part in the Design Studio Co-Habitation workshop as part of the Lviv/Vienna Research Program, conducted by the research department of Drawing and Visual Languages. E264–01, the TU Wien.
The project lasted from April 28 to May 5, 2023 in the city of Drosendorf, Lower Austria. The student group from Lviv Polytechnic was led by Svitlana Linda, Doctor of Architecture, Professor, Head of the Department of Design and Architecture Fundamentals, and Anna Fedak, Doctor of Philosophy, assistant at the Department of Design and Architecture Fundamentals. Students majoring in Design, in particular Yuliia Shtets, Yustyna Pavliuk, Yana Shtets, Motria Tyrpych, as well as students majoring in Architecture and Urban Planning, including Mariia Fedykiv and Danylo Kopets, took part in the workshop.
The team leaders from the TU Wien were Christine Hohenbüchler, Doctor of Architecture, Professor, Director of the Institute of Art and Design, Head of the Drawing and Visual Languages and Ingrid Manka, Head of the Department’s Research Group. The students from the TU Wien and architecture schools of Venice, Brussels and Paris took part in the workshop.
The theme of the workshop was related to the latest concept of Animal Aided Design, that is, design that takes into account the needs of animals, insects, and birds living in a certain area. Designing is carried out in such a way as to compensate the natural inhabitants for their living conditions as much as possible. The student workshop was aimed at drawing the attention of the local community to the problems of animals, insects and birds.
Four international student groups worked within the event. The students listened to several lectures by famous Austrian designers, and also visited the Thayatal National Park near Hardegg. The result of the five-day workshop was the presentation of four interactive installation projects, in which students creatively tried to demonstrate the problems and difficulties of cohabitation between humans and animals.
