Recently, 13 Ukrainian scientists joined the projects initiated by scientific teams from the Netherlands. The scientists won the competitive selection for additional grant opportunities from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) for Ukrainian scientists «NWO-NFSU 2023 Partnership Initiative».

Tetiana Stepura, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor at the Department of Business Economics and Investment, the Institute of Economics and Management, Lviv Polytechnic National University, joined one of the Dutch projects. The researcher plans to investigate whether the EU adheres to the principles of decent work for Ukrainian migrants, how deep the inequality is with regard to the work of migrants from Ukraine, and whether there is progress in solving this problem.

The principles of decent work for all workers are provided in the Concept of decent work, which was adopted by the International Labour Organization in 1999. «However, inequality in the field of labour still remains, and the standards of decent work and social protection for migrants may be violated, noted the interlocutor. – I suggested that Dutch scientists investigate whether these principles have been observed in relation to Ukrainian migrants. I hope that my research will help to achieve the overall goal of the Working Democracy project, to understand how different forms of work (especially on the periphery of labour markets) affect people’s democratic views and whether this corresponds to the norms of democracy».

As part of the research, Tetiana Stepura plans to conduct an online survey among Ukrainian migrants (and not only in the Netherlands). «It is important to get answers to the question «What has changed?» the researcher explained. – This will help to understand whether there is progress regarding the decent work of migrants and the development of democratic values, to compare the situation before and during the war. Unfortunately, it is not easy to achieve this progress, and in the case of migrant labour it is even more difficult».

Tetiana Stepura has considerable experience in researching migration processes, in particular, she studied the impact of Ukrainian migration on the labour markets of Poland and Germany. She also developed her own methodology for assessing inequality and researched this issue in different regions of Ukraine.
