On November 18, 2021, a training seminar «Concepts and characteristics of Small Modular Reactors in the United States» was held at Lviv Polytechnic with the assistance of the Department of Heat Engineering and Thermal and Nuclear Power Plants, the Institute of Power Engineering and Control Systems. The seminar was held within the framework of an agreement on scientific and technical activities signed between Lviv Polytechnic National University and the State Enterprise «State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety».
The purpose of the seminar was to acquaint academics and students of Ukrainian technical institutions of higher education with innovative nuclear technologies and advanced projects of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the United States.
The event was held in a hybrid online and offline. This approach facilitated the participation of a wider audience, as well as compliance with all quarantine measures.
At the lectures, the participants got acquainted with the main technical and economic aspects of SMRs, the features of the three most promising projects and protective measures of such SMRs as NuScale, SMR-160 and Westinghouse. The regulatory issues related to the introduction of SMRs technology were also discussed.
