A novelty of the academic year
This year, the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems (AIS), the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies (ICSIT), Lviv Polytechnic, introduced a new discipline – Industrial Robotics and Information Systems Integration. The third-year students of the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies are studying it in the R&D laboratory of Somatic Ukraine, which specializes in computer programming and robotics.
The program was developed by Yevhen Zasoba, Director of Somatic Ukraine, and Assistant at the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems. Its goal is to help students master the basics of artificial intelligence methods and tools and acquire the skills to use them.
Lecturers at the R&D lab explain how to use modern mathematical tools and engineering achievements to create various robots, as well as how robot programming differs from other types of software development. The program includes both classical approaches to robotics and the use of neural networks to control robots. During laboratory and practical classes, students have the opportunity to build and program various types of robots and build a simulation of their own robot.
– The introduction of the new discipline was initiated by Professor Nataliia Shakhovska, Director of the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies, says Yevhenii Zasoba. – She asked me if my colleagues and I were interested. After all, we make robots and this is quite a rare case in Lviv and Ukraine at the level we do it.
Nataliia Shakhovska had an idea to add robotics to the bachelor’s degree program in artificial intelligence. The idea seemed very interesting. My colleagues and I developed a curriculum that we thought is necessary for robotics, as it is a specific area – it is impossible to find a Department that really has everything you need.
