Lviv continues to create new inclusive cultural products. This week, all of the city’s children’s libraries will have received new Braille books. Each book has an audio version, a relief image which can be «seen» by touch, and a universal design – that is, it has both a Braille and a flat regular font that allows both sighted and blind children to read it. In total there are 220 books: 10 literary works of various genres with a circulation of 22 copies each.
The project was implemented by the NGO «Rehabilitation Fund for the Blind» with the financial support of the Department of Social Protection of Lviv City Council and with the assistance of the Resource Center for Educational Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities, Lviv Polytechnic National University. Many people joined the initiative – writers, actors, artists, designers and others.
– Our Resource Center was engaged in the literature printing within the project «Braille book». A lot of diverse literature of different genres, both for adults and children, was published. In particular, Hrytsko Chubai collection The Pentateuch was published for the adults. The book is extremely valuable for us, as it was voiced by the author’s daughter Solomiia Chubai. She noted her father would be extremely happy to learn that his poetry became available to blind children and adults. I believe this project will continue, because it is really necessary and very important, said Kateryna Ivashutina, a specialist at the Resource Center for Educational Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities, Lviv Polytechnic.
Not only 17 city libraries, but 2 Lviv regional libraries, as well as the Lviv special boarding school № 100 for blind children will have received the books.
