For 25 years Lviv is on the UNESCO World Heritage list: an international conference was held at the University

On December 5, 2023, the international conference "Lviv - 25 years on the UNESCO World Heritage List" was held at the Lviv Polytechnic National University (on the anniversary of the city's entry into the UNESCO World Heritage List). Results. Prospects". The organizers of the conference were the Department of Architecture and Restoration of the Lviv Polytechnic National University and the Lviv Regional Organization of the Ukrainian Society for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments.

"Lviv is a city whose architecture has unique features, which is of exceptional value against the background of world culture. The enormous attractiveness of the city lies to a large extent in its original architecture and urbanism," said the chairman of the conference, head of the department of architecture and restoration, prof. Mykola Bevz opened the first section of the conference for guests and conference participants.

"The central historical part of Lviv is a large architectural and art museum. The entry of Lviv into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 contributed to wider recognition of its unique urban, architectural and artistic heritage in the world. However, this recognition also encourages further work on the study and protection of the city's historical and cultural heritage, restoration and museification works," Mykola Valentinovych added.

An important attribute of the conference was the speeches of the participants and the discussion of legal support, scientific research and monument protection activities in Lviv. In addition, the problems and prospects of carrying out restoration works and revaluation of the architectural and urban planning environment were considered.

Within the framework of the conference, a separate section "Immovable and movable artistic heritage in the aspect of museification of valuable historical urban environment" worked. During the work of this section, the vice-rector for scientific and pedagogical work and international relations, prof. Nataliya Chukhrai and the head of the University Project Office, Nazariy Andrushchak, presented the results of the participation of the university team in the international grant called "Aurora", the purpose of which is to develop technical means for the preservation and protection of valuable works of art, museum exhibits from external influences, unwanted movements, and thefts. The speakers emphasized the special need for the development of such a direction of research in the conditions of the war in Ukraine, the looting of its museums by the Russian occupiers. A researcher from the USA, Myron Stakhiv, noted the special need to protect the huge number of works of sacred art that are in Ukrainian churches.

In conclusion, the resolution of the conference reflects the need for coordination of work in this aspect of polytechnic scientists, museums and historical preservation institutions and organizations.
