On December 18, 2025, the University hosted another meeting of the scientific seminar within the framework of the Horizons of Science project, organized by the Lviv Society of Scientists with the support of the Simons Foundation. The event, entitled Science at the Service of Life: Hydrogel Solutions for Emergency Medicine, was dedicated to modern scientific approaches in creating medical materials that play an important role in preserving life and restoring patients’ health.
The report was delivered by Volodymyr Samaryk, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, Leading Researcher, Professor at the Department of Organic Chemistry, the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies, Lviv Polytechnic National University. In his report, he presented developments in the field of hydrogel medical devices, in particular AQUIOR medical products, as well as a comprehensive scientific and practical approach to their implementation in medical practice.
Special attention was paid to the technology of moist wound healing as a modern and scientifically sound concept of treatment, in particular for burn skin lesions. The speaker outlined the market for the use of hydrogels in the world, spoke about foreign analogues and analyzed their effect and clinical experience of use. It was emphasized that hydrogel materials are not intended to stop bleeding, but they play an important role in creating an optimal environment for healing, in particular in the treatment of burns, protecting damaged tissues and stabilizing the patient’s condition at the subsequent stages of treatment.
The report examined in detail the use of hydrogel compositions for the treatment of burns, trophic ulcers, diabetic foot, chronic and complex wounds that heal poorly, as well as their use in emergency and specialized medical care. An important emphasis of the speech was the need to include hydrogel products in the treatment protocols in force in Ukraine, taking into account modern scientific data and international experience.
The activities and interdisciplinary scientific and organizational work of the Center for Research on Polymers and Medical Products, established within the framework of the project «Development of hydrogel medical supplies for emergency medical services in case of penetrating abdominal trauma within the creation of a research center for new polymeric materials for medicine», which received financial support from the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, were also presented. The Center brings together specialists in chemistry, materials science, medicine, veterinary medicine and engineering and serves as a platform for the development, research and implementation of innovative medical materials.
The seminar aroused considerable interest among the members of the Lviv Society of Scientists. The lively discussion after the report confirmed the relevance of the topic and the importance of close cooperation between science and medicine.

This event was the fourth seminar within the framework of the Horizons of Science project, which was held at Lviv Polytechnic. The university is one of the locations for holding these scientific events in Lviv and contributes to the development of an open interdisciplinary scientific dialogue between the city’s scientific institutions.
