On September 10–11, 2021, the 10th International Symposium «The Relations between Ukraine and Romania. History and modernity» took place in Satu Mare, Romania. 1500 ethnic Ukrainians live in the county of Satu Mare, and in Romania in total – 62 thousand. The wide representation of the legislature and the executive on both sides testified to the urgency of the event, and the participation of representatives of the academic communities from Ukraine and Romania – the scientific interest in the issues under discussion.
At the invitation of the organizers, the Union of the Ukrainians of Romania (UUR), the delegation of the International Institute of Education, Culture and Diaspora Relations, Lviv Polytechnic National University, consisting of Iryna Kliuchkovska, Director, Andrii Yatsiv and Oksana Piatkovska, Deputy Directors, and Oksana Horda, Senior Researcher, took part in the event, presented scientific reports, as well as joined the discussions and debates.
The Union of the Ukrainians of Romania has a long history and its own difficult path in preserving the Ukrainian identity of the indigenous population. Founded in 1946, it has been actively operating for the development of Ukrainian schooling, higher Ukrainian studies, public organizations and the consolidation of the Ukrainian community in Romania. The UUR has gained great authority in Romania and is represented in the highest body of government – parliament. At present, the interest of the Ukrainian national minority is represented by Mykola-Myroslav Petretsky, Chairman at the UUR.
Luba Horvat, Secretary General of the UUR, the main organizer of the symposium, opened the event. She expressed her gratitude to the large audience for their offline presence at the event, despite the difficult period of the coronavirus pandemic, and to all co-organizers who joined the event.
