The Institute of Jurisprudence, Psychology and Innovative Education, Lviv Polytechnic National University, organized a meeting with Dainius Zhalimas, former head of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania, Doctor of Law, Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Vytautas Magnus University (Kaunas, Republic of Lithuania),and member of the Venice Commission. The professor gave a lecture on «Consolidation of Western geopolitical orientation in the Constitution of Ukraine» for law students.
The meeting was opened by Professor Vitalii Kovalchuk, head of the Department of Theory of Law and Constitutionalism, Honored Education Worker of Ukraine. First of all, Professor Kovalchuk emphasized that the invited guest is a great friend of Ukraine who helps Lviv Polytechnic a lot.
Thus, the floor was given to the distinguished guest. In his speech, the Lithuanian Professor noted that he supports Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression, and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to meet with Polytechnicians.
«Long before the full-scale invasion, Lithuania demonstrated its firm position in support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Together with all Ukrainians, we are glad that Ukraine has enshrined in its Constitution the strategic goal of full membership in the European Union and NATO. This is really an incredible achievement that will help strengthen the state», said the professor.
In his lecture, Dainius Zalimas analyzed the peculiarities of the implementation of the Western geopolitical orientation and the importance of European integration for Ukraine.
«The Western geopolitical focus ensures the harmony and integrity of all constitutional values and principles. Such direction requires the Europeanization of the Constitution of Ukraine and the entire legal system. As soon as we realize the potential of these principles, we will forget about the Russian yoke forever. I wish Ukraine and its citizens a quick victory. Remember that you can always count on the support of Lithuania and other European allies», added the speaker.
In addition, students had the opportunity to communicate with the professor and find out answers to questions that arose during the lecture. First of all, young people were interested in the issue of the possibility of the end of the war in the near future, support from European allies and the abolition of restrictions on traveling abroad after the end of martial law. According to Mr. Zalimas, restricting the right to travel abroad, for men after the victory for a few more years, contradicts European human rights standards and is inappropriate.
At the end of the meeting, the distinguished guest expressed warm wishes and gave advice to the Polytechnicians:
«Gain new knowledge and be ambitious. This will help you reach incredible heights in your profession. The most important thing is that you like what you do. Then you can become successful».
