On November 19, 2020, the International Institute of Education, Culture and Diaspora Relations, Lviv Polytechnic National University, in partnership with the Ukrainian Association in South Africa organized the International Round Table «Ukrainians of Africa: Horizons of Joint Growth». At this event, the team of the Institute presented a study of Ukrainians living in South Africa, and the invited guests discussed its results at a panel discussion.
The study «Ukrainians of the Republic of South Africa: Society, Identity and Future», conducted by the International Institute of Education, Culture and Diaspora Relations at the initiative of the Ukrainian community in South Africa, is another step in implementing a large-scale IECDR project to study migration from Ukraine. In this survey, a team of researchers used a qualitative methodology – in-depth interviews with Ukrainian migrants in South Africa.
The IECDR team (consisting of leading sociologist Viktoriia Hoisan, researcher Yurii Marusyk, sociologist Khrystyna Zhylych, and Deputy Director Oksana Piatkovska) presented the results of the study. They covered the following topics:
- a typical portrait of a Ukrainian man and woman in South Africa;
- causes and peculiarities of migration, as well as the process and consequences of integration of Ukrainian migrants in South Africa;
- the identity of Ukrainian migrants and their children in South Africa;
- requests of Ukrainians in South Africa to the public sector;
- ways and channels of communication between Ukrainians in South Africa and Ukraine;
- vision of the personal future of the respondents and their children, as well as prospects for the development of the Ukrainian community in South Africa.
