This year’s defense of bachelor’s theses at the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Fundamental Sciences, Lviv Polytechnic, became special not only because of the remote mode. Despite the unusualness of quarantine during the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department had two significant reasons to be proud of the work done with the «new» bachelors.
First of all, for the first time in the history of the Department the bachelor’s thesis, defended by a student of PM-43 Vitalii Kinakh under the guidance of Professor Rostyslav Bun, included 4 publications already indexed in the Scopus scientometric database and an h-index of 2 (Scopus). This result and the level of research, performed by Vitalii within the framework of international grants, deserves not only an excellent evaluation and an indisputable recommendation for admission to a two-year master’s degree program, but also respect to a researcher.
The topic of Vitalii Kinakh research is «Improvement and analysis of high-resolution data on greenhouse gas emissions from using fossil fuels: bias compensation and local climatic zones applying». Of course, scientific publications, indexed by the well-known international scientometric database Scopus, are not something new for the Department of Applied Mathematics when it comes to defending master’s thesis. Many students of Professor Rostyslav Bun had previously published their works while being master students. However, Vitalii Kinakh became the first bachelor student whose scientific achievements at Scopus can be envied by many of more experienced researchers.
In addition, for the first time, this year’s bachelors’ theses were written within the development of the internship program in IT companies for students of the Department of Applied Mathematics.
