Bohdan Markovych is the co-author of four monographs, has more than thirty scientific articles indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, in particular in the Q1 and Q2 journals: Ultramicroscopy, Physical Review B, Journal of Physical Chemistry A, Journal of Mathematical Physics, Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, Philosophical Magazine Letters and Philosophical Magazine (this journal is considered the world’s oldest scientific periodical – it was founded in 1798 by Richard Taylor; it published well-known scholars from school textbooks such as Faraday, Joule, Thomson, Rayleigh , Rutherford, etc.). In total, the professor has about 150 scientific works.

In 2020, Bohdan Markovych was awarded the University badge for significant achievements in scientific work.

– I received this award for defending my doctoral dissertation. Lviv Polytechnic has such a good tradition – to honour its employees who defended their doctoral dissertations with the university badge. And in 2012 I was awarded a diploma of Lviv Polytechnic National University for significant achievements in teaching and research.

Bohdan Markovych is a scientific editor and executive secretary of the scientific journal Mathematical Modeling and Computing. All information about the magazine is available on its website.

– Eight years ago, Rector Yurii Bobalo initiated the reform of the Lviv Polytechnic Visnyk and the creation of scientific journals. Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics prof. Petro Kostrobii asked me what I thought about creating a new English-language scientific journal on mathematical modeling and computing. Without hesitation, I supported him, because at that time we already had publications in high-ranking international journals, we corresponded with their reviewers, saw how the work was done in those publications, that is, we were generally well versed in this area.

For the publishing system of the journals, the founders chose LaTeX, the basis of which (TeX) was once developed by Donald Knuth, author of the famous volumes «The Art of Computer Programming». This system is characterized by stability and good results for texts with a large number of cumbersome formulas, in addition, it is free.

– Using the scientific relationships of prof. Petro Kostrobii, we created an editorial board, involving well-known foreign scientists. From the very beginning, we had an ambitious goal to create a scientific journal that would be able to compete with high-ranking international journals. Since 2014 we decided to publish two issues a year in English. At our invitation, Veronika Dmytruk, Associate Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages, who has a mathematical and philological education, became the language editor. Initially, at least two issues had to be published so that the next issues of the journal could be included in the list of professional publications in Ukraine. To do this, well-known scientists were invited to submit articles, and many of them responded, although they understood that these two issues will not be included in this list. They saw that we were serious and trusted us.

In addition to research, the professor loves working with students. After defending his dissertation in 2004, he began to deliver the course «Equations of Mathematical Physics» – a voluminous, difficult course for students of the Department of Applied Mathematics. Since his student years the professor was acquainted with it, but to a lesser extent. However, the true understanding of this course came when he began to read it himself. He also teaches Control Theory and Quantum Computers.

– The course «Quantum Computers» is also new, I have been teaching it for several years – it is a new field on the verge of Quantum Physics and Computer Science, which is developing rapidly. This course is taught at many of world’s leading universities, and we started teaching it three years ago at the Department of Applied Mathematics. These are my main lecture courses. At the beginning of my work at the Department I conducted laboratory and practical classes in other disciplines. I prefer courses where there is serious mathematics and consistent logical conclusions based on certain fundamental statements.
